Spatial Intelligence Studio

Environmental Design Lab

College of the Canyons | Design III | Instructor: Carlos Gomez | Valencia, California | Fall 2018

The Spatial Intelligence Studio, (S.I.S.) is an independent prototyping and fabrication studio sponsored by CalArts, UCLA and the College of the Canyons. S.I.S. teaches designers to engage, speculate and innovate, to take the lead in re-imagining the limits of design. CNC mills, laser cutters, 3-D printers, and multi-axial robotic arms are provided to extend the range of creativity. The students and faculty critically examine the rich possibilities of the built environment and both question and assert what is possible within an open-access 24/7 studio. With the increasing dangers of climate change, creative solutions are necessary/ Designed to be considerate of the environment, sustainable practices are implemented throughout the site to lessen the carbon footprint. These design choices include photovoltaic arrays, earth sheltering, vegetated roofs and recycled building materials.
